McCormick Motors, Inc., is very much interested, invested, and innovative in renewable energy. USA Today recognized the organization with an award for energy innovation. Among other efforts, they have planted more than 100 trees at the dealership in Nappanee and completed feasibility studies for wind and solar power systems - and they've seen cost benefits for their innvoation.

Now McCormick Motors, Inc. and Goshen College have formed a educational and environmental partnership with the goal of becoming a small business lab site of promoting energy conservation and environmentally friendly practices. The partnership began this Spring as part of a May term senior seminar class project. On Thursday, September 11, Gordon Moore, Vice President of McCormick Motors, and Jerrell Ross Richer, Associate Professor of Economics at Goshen College, will give their presentation, “Making Cents of Energy,” at our fall kick-off event.

Gordon will tell the story of what motivated him to begin investing in energy efficiency at McCormick Motors, Inc., how he made it happen, and what benefits have resulted. He will discuss renewable energy technologies in a small business context and will talk about the role of public policy in the renewable energy industry as well as next steps small businesses can take.

Jerrell will talk about how market forces (higher oil and gasoline prices in particular) are affecting the economy and how this provides an opportunity to invest in new technologies. He will demonstrate a financial calculator that he and his students created to estimate the financial costs and benefits of investing in renewable energy technology at McCormick Motors, Inc.
